SAFETY
Tinting your vehicles glass will help to increase the break strength by adding a microscopic layer of high tensile materials, keeping broken glass shards together upon shattering.
PROTECTS INTERIOR
Your vehicles interior is susceptible to breakdown more-so here in Tasman than many other places due to our sunny weather. Tint will eliminate fading & UV damage.

WHAT PEOPLE WANT TO KNOW
FAQ’S ABOUT YOUR INSTALL
New Zealand bases its window tint law on the class of your vehicle.
FRONT SIDES:
-The 2x front side windows (driver & passenger) of EVERY vehicle on our roads is to be no darker than 35% VLT with the film on the glass.
ALL WINDOWS BEHIND THE DRIVER:
-If your vehicle is an MA class (almost all passenger vehicles) hatchbacks, sedans, coupes, station wagons, cross-over SUVs, MPV style people movers (up to 8 seats), convertibles etc, then 35% VLT is the legal limit on ALL side windows and rear screen.
-If your vehicle is anything but MA class (MB, MC, NA, NB, heavy class, emergency class, special class) – this is all ute’s, 4×4’s, cargo vans, people movers with 9 or more seats, trucks, campervans, busses, road going machinery, public response vehicles, hearses, limo’s – then you can legally have all windows behind the drivers seat tinted as dark as you like.
FRONT WINDSCREEN:
-The front windscreen on every vehicle is to be no darker than 70% VLT. Because front windscreens are laminated, the glass is usually always already 70% VLT from the factory, so no tint can legally be applied (in most cases). You can however apply a visor strip, or “anti-glare band” along the top edge of your front windscreen, no lower than 100mm from the top edge of the view port (clear part) of the glass. This can be as dark as you like.
First off, decide which of our window films best suits your solar protection needs and your budget. All of this info is available on this page, but please get in touch with Nicholas to confirm which film is right for you, and the cost of tinting your specific vehicle. You can do this either via email ([email protected]), or by texting or calling 0212886846 anytime, or by popping into our tint studio at 76d Vanguard street, Nelson (Please note: because Nick works solo he is not always here, so a call or message to confirm we are there first is always best). Nick has 20 years of industry experience, so can recommend the best window film for your needs. Book with Nick, then, all you have to do is drop your vehicle in and let us work our magic! A full vehicle tint usually takes 2-3 hours, so we can work it in whenever suits you best. We can even accommodate you after-hours if needed, as we live on site too.r part) of the glass. This can be as dark as you like.
1x side window – 30 mins
1x rear screen 30-60 mins
2x front sides – 1 hour
2 door vehicles – 2 hours
4 door vehicles – 2.5-3 hours
Station wagons/4x4s – 2.5-3.5 hours
Vans/MPVs – 2.5-3 hours
Camper vans – 3-4 hours
Busses – 5-7 hours
We do not like to rush any job, so lenience is appreciated.
Cutting the film – We ensure every piece of tint is custom fitted to the exact shape of your vehicles glass, down to the millimeter. Using our precise hand-cutting techniques allows us to be more accurate than generic computer-cut patterns.
Heat shrinking the film – We then need to heat shrink the film on the outside of any convex (curved) windows to get the film sitting completely flat on the glass before installation. This process can vary in difficulty. Some vehicles rear windscreens have extreme complex curves & take a lot of skill to shrink correctly.
Glass prep – All film is installed on the inside of your glass. To apply the film cleanly we need full access to your glass, this may mean removing interior door cards, rubber seals, third brake lights and/or other trims that don’t allow us to position the film easily. We do not remove glass unless its absolutely necessary, which in 99% of all cases, it is not. (Amateur tinters may choose to remove side windows, but this is unnecessary and shows lack of skill and ability to adapt). We cover all delicate interior surfaces with a waterproof, lint-free cloth, spray soapy water onto your windows & razor blade them clean with stainless steel glass-safe blades (side windows only) or with super fine steel wool (or a clay bar) on rear windscreens to prevent damage to the rear defroster lines. This usually removes 99% of all stuck on grime, sticker residue & other debris. We then scrub with a glass safe scrub pad, squeegee, flush, then squeegee & flush again. We also ensure all rubbers and seals are thoroughly cleaned before installation – the goal is zero contamination, so any hidden dust & debris is our nemesis. Sometimes this requires taping off your seals.
Apply tint gel – Now we implement the use of tint gel around the edges of your glass, which is an expensive, specialized thick clear gel that doesn’t drip. This gel keeps contamination from inside your seals and window edges at bay during installation of your film, and also allows instant tack of your window film edges so your windows can be used right away. A very important step on certain vehicles. (A lot of tinters skip this step)
Applying slip solution – Now we spray your glass with the films mounting solution, which is distilled water filtered through a 0.5 micron filter, mixed with Film-On, (a soap-like concentrate) which allows us to slide the film into place upon installation.
Applying the film – With your window tint now ready to go on our peel board, we peel the clear backing off, spray the films now exposed adhesive with the mounting solution, mist the air around the vehicle (to keep air-born dust particles down) and install your film onto the glass. This is where the real skill comes in to ensure a completely contamination-free install. After sliding the film perfectly into place we squeegee the solution out from between the film and glass with multiple passes to ensure 95% of it is gone. We then shave the top edge of your wind up windows with a razor blade, leaving zero gap or overhang for a factory-tinted glass look. Note: We do this on every wind up window. Some tinters also skip this step, especially those using computer cut patterns, as they slide the film up to just below the top edge so they dont have to shave it. We do not leave a gap like this! This is where the skills of precision hand cutting & shaving edges comes into play.
Clean and inspect – After installing your film, we thoroughly inspect every square inch of your tinted glass to ensure no contamination is present. We are particularly fussy, so sometimes even 1 or 2 specs of dust can result in a re-do before your vehicle leaves our shop. (see further down about acceptable industry standards)
Drive away in style – You’re good to go! We will ask you to leave your windows up for 24-48 hours to allow the remaining mounting solution to dry naturally so your films adhesive can fully cure. Your film has a lifetime manufacturer-backed warranty that is transferable to any future owner of the vehicle and is backed by our nationwide dealer network for peace of mind, no matter where you end up!
Almost all windows are tinted in place. We do not remove glass on 99% of vehicles for an efficient and risk free install. We will always notify you if glass renoval is necessary before hand, as there may be an added cost for this service, but very unlikely. Some vehicles require interior door panel or window sweep removal for ease of installation which we are very experienced at.
No. We scrape, scrub, rinse & repeat to ensure your windows are 100% clear of contaminants before tinting, so don’t stress about cleaning them too much before we start, although we do charge for existing window film removal or old tint glue removal.
Yes, we can definitely remove it for you, however we don’t enjoy it haha. In saying that, we know what we’re doing. Removal can be very time consuming so we do charge for this service. Also, the tint glue remover we use isn’t a cheap product, so the cost incurred with film removal is more than justified. Film removal can take up to 3 hours, or as little as 1 hour for a full vehicle. You can expect to pay around $100-$300 for a full vehicle’s tint removal. In some cases this may be more or less depending on the size of your vehicle and how difficult it is to remove (we don’t always know how hard it will be until we rip into it). We use a steamer where required to soften the films adhesive, tint glue remover (a spray on dissolvent) to melt the adhesive, razor blades and steel wool for this messy process. Tint removal of your rear windscreen carries a risk of damage to your rear defroster lines, even during our standard film removal process, which we have a limitation of responsibility for.

2-7 days. Window film is installed with a special mounting solution made up of soap and water to allow us to slide the film correctly into position upon installation. We squeegee 90% of this solution out however the remaining thin layer needs to dry naturally. During this process, the left over mounting solution may appear milky or hazy. This happens with every tint, so don’t be alarmed. Eventually this moisture will uniformly thin out, pooling into very small “moisture blisters” throughout every window. This is completely normal and means your film is almost done curing. This process can take up to a week in the colder months to completely dry, and as little as 12 hours in the summer. You MUST leave your windows up for 24-48 hours after install to ensure the films adhesive has done its job efficiently. Please, DO NOT attempt to prick or squish out any moisture blisters that may become noticeable. This is a completely normal process and will evaporate on its own. You may also notice what we call a “whiting” effect over any “dot-matrix” areas around the border of your rear windows. These small dots are raised off the glass on the inside and therefore hold the film off the glass between each dot. This creates a bubble-like effect that can look uneven from the outside of your glass, immediately after install. This is normal also and will dry out evenly as the moisture evaporates. If you feel the need, you can run your finger along this dot matrix area a few days after install to “squish down” the adhesive between the dots to help reduce the appearance of any left over whiting effect, however this is not usually necessary and is quite unnoticeable when the film is cured. We cannot force dry the film to speed up this process.
To put it simply, yes and no, haha. This is the biggest hurdle every window tinter (who actually cares about his work) faces – getting your tint 100% spec free. So, let’s talk about it. One or two small specs in your window film may be noticeable upon close inspection when your film is cured. This is what we call unavoidable contamination, and it doesn’t affect the performance of your film in any way. However, notice I said “one or two”? That’s because one or 2 specs is whats considered acceptable in the industry, and getting your install 100% spec free has actually been tested & was proven to be physically impossible in a normal controlled tinting environment. The science behind this suggests it’s because we do not tint in a vacuum or controlled laboratory environment. So, the community has a standard, an unwritten rule of sorts that suggests there is no universal numeric standard or official specification in the car window tint industry that dictates an exact, allowed count of dust specks per install, however the 3-Foot Inspection Rule dictates the acceptability of your install, instead of a strict numerical dust-spec limit. The qualitative standard used by professional shops and associations like the International Window Film Association is as follows:
Inspection Distance: The tint should be evaluated from a distance of 3 feet away.
Lighting and Angle: Inspection must take place in natural daylight at a 90-degree angle to the glass.
The Rule of Invisibility: If a minor dust speck or tiny imperfection cannot be seen from 3 feet away under normal natural lighting, it is considered an acceptable, standard limitation of a non-laboratory shop environment.
Acceptable: One or two tiny, unobtrusive specs per window, or minor haziness/micro-bubbles that disappear during the standard 3-to-5-day curing process.
Unacceptable (Warrants a Redo): Clustered contamination, prominent hairs, large debris, creases, or any noticeable specks that are clearly visible from a normal viewing distance or distort vision.
Aside from leaving your windows up for the first 2 days, your new window film requires little to no maintenance. All that is required is that you stay away from ammonia based glass cleaner, abrasive materials and harsh chemicals when wiping clean your tint. A lint-free microfiber cloth, hot soapy water and tint-safe glass cleaner should remove 99% of grime & streaks. Beware of the risk of scratching your film with things like rings, seatbelt buckles, dog claws and cargo. Your film cannot be peeled off easily and takes a lot to damage. Your film has a hard wearing scratch coat to ensure long lasting like-new looks.
Sorry, but we do not have a customer loan vehicle.
Unfortunately, our small tint studio doesn’t have a designated customer lounge, however we do have a small table & chairs if you need to take a seat while we work our magic on your vehicle.
Unfortunately, our small tint studio doesn’t have a designated customer lounge, however we do have a small table & chairs if you need to take a seat while we work our magic on your vehicle.
We do require somewhere completely wind free & out of the sun or rain with enough room to fully open the doors in order to tint your vehicle. Even the slightest breeze can pick up dust and contaminants which can easily blow between the film and glass upon installation, which is why we do not tint outside. Your window film is shaped on the outside of the vehicle which is a tedious & precise process, so a mostly enclosed garage or warehouse is ideal for us to execute the high quality finish we are known for. Car ports can work if they’re enclosed on 3 sides. Do not stress too much about extra lighting as we bring what we need. We also require access to a power point for our heat gun & enough room to set up a small portable cutting table out of the weather.
